Sandra Oh, Constance Wu and “Crazy Rich Asians” have received nominations for the 76th Golden Globe Awards.
Oh, who was nominated for her leading role as the tenacious titular spy in BBC America’s “Killing Eve,” won a Golden Globe in 2006 for playing Cristina Yang in “Grey’s Anatomy,” but this is her first nod in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series category. The last time an Asian woman won the award for a leading role was in 1981, when Yoko Shimada went home with a trophy for “Shogun.”
Earlier this year, Oh made history by becoming the first woman of Asian descent to be nominated for an Emmy in a leading actress category.
Oh will also co-host the awards ceremony, set to air Jan. 6, with Andy Samberg.
Nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy is “Crazy Rich Asians,” which swept the box office upon its August release. It will compete against “The Favourite,” “Green Book,” “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Vice” for the prize.
And this marks the first Golden Globe nomination for Wu, who before her turn as Rachel in “Crazy Rich Asians” was best known as the star of ABC’s “Fresh Off the Boat.” She is the first person of Asian descent to be nominated in the category since “Jesus Christ Superstar”’s Yvonne Elliman in 1974.
