North Korean Refugees Speak Out

My friend Christine is a reporter at the NBC affiliate in Phoenix, Ariz., where I live. She worked for months on this story about a North Korean couple living as refugees in town, and it aired last week. Did you know that the Dept. of Homeland Security has reported there are less than 100 North Korean refugees living in the U.S.? One hundred. That’s it. Unbelievable. So you can imagine how rare it was for Christine to stumble upon this couple, especially in a city like Phoenix, which isn’t exactly known for its bustling Asian population.

Theirs – like so many refugee stories – is one of loss, heartbreak, perseverance and a second chance. Thank you to the couple for sharing their story and for reminding us, especially during this week of thanks, of the most important thing that we should be thankful for: our freedom.
