Los Angeles, the second largest city in America, is home to many thriving communities, with Asian Americans making up 14 percent of that population. Besides protecting the its citizens, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) advocates for diversity and inclusiveness within their workforce, especially for women and Asian Americans.
1. Asian Americans comprise 8 percent of the LAFD.

This percentage is a little more than half of the Asian American population in Los Angeles, meaning we could do better to reflect the strong Asian demographic in the city.
2. The process to apply is challenging, but completely worth it.

A high school diploma is the one minimum requirement to apply, but further in the application applicants will need to do a background check, written exam, C-PAT physical, EMT training, and on-call time as a firefighter. Though it sounds intimidating, the fire department works with you, pays well, and includes benefits like ample vacation time.
3. As a firefighter, you will acquire different skills.

LAFD promotes wearing many hats within its ranks. Firefighters are encouraged to try out various careers, including jobs as paramedics, dispatchers, arson investigators, fitness instructors, pilots and even boat drivers.
4. You are not strictly confined to working in fire trucks.

According to LAFD fire boat engineer Paul Villagrana, firetrucks are not the only mode of transportation. LAFD has boats, airplanes, and helicopters in its possession as well. Fun Fact: Fire Boat No. 2 is the largest of all the LAFD boats!
5. This organization also supports the community through outreach programs.

Although hours can seem unique and demanding when compared with other jobs, LAFD is dedicated to helping its surrounding community. LAFD has created three main pilot programs: LAFD Sober, Fire Strategic Integration Program (FIRSTIN), and Nurse Practitioner Program.
