Apparently, I had a flat nose when I was a little girl. At least that’s what my mother believed since she always reminded me to pull and massage my nose to sharpen its shape. While I think my nose turned out pretty nicely, it seems no amount of massaging and pulling changed my face shape enough to have sunglasses sit well on my face.
I inherited my mom’s high cheek bones and combined with my low nose bridge, my sunglasses are constantly moving around whenever I talk or smile. Other times I find myself with pink marks on my nose and cheeks from my sunglasses sitting on them all day. Not cute.
As it turns out, this is a pretty common struggle among Asians. This is why many of you will be just as excited as I was to discover Covry Sunwear. Created by former high school classmates Athina Wang and Florence Shin, Covry features quality lightweight frames with an Elevated Fitâ„¢. This means longer nose pads, reduced frame curvature and a narrower nose bridge. They are designed for people with a lower nose bridge and higher cheekbones, like me!
“We have always struggled to find sunglasses that fit us well,” Shin told NBC News. “They would slide down the nose or rest on our cheeks, which made them very uncomfortable to wear. We decided to start this company when we realized that we weren’t the only ones that had this problem.”
They have received a lot of positive feedback, especially from the Asian American community. While the designs were created with features common for people of Asian ethnicities in mind, they have discovered that people of all backgrounds can relate to this problem.
Between the two young ladies, they have an impressive list of degrees in fashion merchandising, international trade and marketing from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York (Shin) and fashion design and business management from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles (Wang). Combined with international fashion industry experiences from top fashion houses, Shin and Wang successfully launched a Kickstarter campaign, and they are now looking to partner with a non-profit organization that supports vision-related issues around the world.
