Freeform orders comedy ‘Brown Girls’ pilot

Freeform, formerly ABC Family, has approved a pilot for “Brown Girls,” a comedy from Shilpi Roy (“Hipsterhood”) and Nastaran Dibai (“According to Jim”), who will both be writing and producing.

“We love this odd couple comedy not just because it is a sophisticated, funny show but we are thrilled to tell a story about part of the American experience that isn’t really on TV today,” said Freeform’s Karey Burke.

The show centers around Rimmi, an Indian American beauty vlogger, and Devi, a native of India who has recently emigrated to America, Deadline.com reports. The cultural differences between the two are apparent from the beginning, and the pair soon find out they have much to learn about each other.

“Brown Girls” is co-penned by Roy and Dibai. Dibai previously wrote for the Iranian American comedy “Funny in Farsi,” which had its own pilot on ABC but didn’t make it to air.

Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment will help produce the show, with Mark Cendrowski of “The Big Bang Theory” in negotiations to direct.
