Culinary rising star Corey Lee, featured in our June 2009 chefs issue, has found a space in San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood for his new restaurant, Benu, according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle. The former chef de cuisine at the renowed French Laundry in Napa Valley plans to demolish an existing restaurant called Two and erect the 66-seat Benu, named after an ancient Egypt’s mythological version of the phoenix.
Lee, past winner of the prestigious James Beard Foundation honor, told KoreAm in May that he was leaving the French Laundry after eight years so he could “express something more personal” in the food he prepares. The new restaurant, to feature American cuisine with international influences, is set to open next spring.
