North Korea’s foreign minister is in Russia for talks in an attempt to ease tensions after Pyongyang’s attack on the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong.
Park Ui-chun will be in Russia until Wednesday and will meet with, among other Russian officials, Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov. South Korea’s chief nuclear envoy, Wi Sung-lac is also expected to visit Russia to talk with his counterpart, Alexei Bordavkin, according to the JoongAng Daily.
According to the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Wi will discuss Yeonpyeong shelling as well as the North’s disclosure of an uranium enrichment plant.
Although Moscow condemned North Korea for the attack on South Korea, Russia is still trying to promote dialogue between the two Koreas and have openly expressed support for resuming the stalled six-party talks, which included the two Koreas, the United States, China, Russia and Japan.
