History was made last night as Aziz Ansari accepted the trophy for Best Actor in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy at the 2018 Golden Globes. The “Master of None” co-creator is the first actor of Asian descent to win the honor in his category.
Taking to the stage, Ansari, who was nominated last year, commented that it “would have really sucked to lose two of these in a row.” “I genuinely didn’t think I was going to win because all of the websites said I was going to lose,” he joked.
Ansari created Netflix’s “Master of None” with Alan Yang, and has won two writing Emmys for the show, in which he portrays the protagonist Dev Shah, a struggling Indian American actor living in New York.
“The only reason my acting is good in that show is because everybody else holds me up,” he said, thanking the cast and crew.
Though Ansari is the first actor of Asian descent to win Best Actor, others — though not many — have come before him in other categories. In 1980, Yoko Shimada won Best Actress in a Television Drama Series for “Shōgun.” Sandra Oh (for the TV series “Grey’s Anatomy”) and Haing Somnang Ngor (for the film “The Killing Fields”) have also won Golden Globes, as supporting actors.
“Master of None,” which first premiered in 2015, aired its second season last year. In an August interview with GQ Style, Ansari said he has not yet started writing a third season.
