Bieber has Yellow Fever

Even if you don’t have BieberFever, you’ve heard his new single with Usher, “Somebody to Love,” on the radio-don’t deny it. But you probably haven’t seen his music video, since that would entail you actually going out of your way to look it up, and, cough, no one does that.
Except it’s almost worth the three plus minutes it takes to watch his video, since his new video features a whole slew of Asian American backdancers, including ABDC’s Poreotix and Beat Freaks, and some interesting weird pink fan dancers. He also has a few scenes with a huge red Chinese character for love in the background, complete with fire. Because you know, fire and love plus Usher and Justin Bieber and a couple of Oompa Loompa-esque dancers makes for a hit.
But apparently Justin Bieber has legitimate love for us Asian Americans: a recent piece in the NY Times reveals that Bieber’s back-up singers are a Filipino-American group called Legaci. They made their initial splash on Youtube, covering Top 40 hits and racking up over 80,000 subscribers, but it seems like working for their 16 year old boss has catapulted them into bigger waters.

“‘I absolutely loved what I saw,’ Mr. Braun said by phone from the Bahamas, where Mr. Bieber and Legaci were rehearsing for a summer tour. “I really wanted someone to be in the band who was from YouTube, so that Justin could give something back to the community that gave so much to him.”

“The amount of exposure they get on the road with Justin is more exposure than they’d ever get working a single with a major label,” he said.”

In any case, I can’t hate on Bieber too much anymore. Even if the spotlight’s mainly on him, he’s sharing it with a lot of deserving people. And his shiny, shiny hair.
