A graduate film student at Columbia College in Chicago was awarded a Student Academy Award in the documentary category last Saturday.
Wonjung Bae accepted the Student Oscar for her film “Vera Klement: Blunt Edge” at a ceremony held at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The documentary is an 11-minute biography of Vera Klement, a Jewish painter in Chicago, and follows the artist as she celebrates her 80th birthday.
The 29-year-old filmmaker gave an emotional and heartfelt acceptance speech in which she said she earned the begrudging respect of her parents.
“When I showed Blunt Edge to my dad he gave me the best compliment ever: ‘It’s watchable,'” she deadpanned.
