For more than two decades, Chin Han has quietly built one of the most impressive careers of any Asian actor working today. While many audiences recognize him from major Hollywood productions like The Dark Knight, Contagion, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Ghost in the Shell, and the Mortal Kombat franchise, his journey began long before he became a familiar face on movie screens around the world. Yet beyond the blockbuster credits and international success is an artist who remains deeply connected to the craft of storytelling. Thoughtful, curious, and constantly evolving, Chin Han approaches his work with the same passion that first drew him to acting years ago. During his recent photo shoot with Character, we sat down with the actor to talk about the changing landscape for Asian performers, the roles that have stayed with him throughout his career, and the lessons he’s learned from working with some of the industry’s most celebrated filmmakers.

You began your career at a time when there was far less visibility and support for Asian actors globally. What feels most different to you now when you look at today’s generation of API creatives?
Well, there are many more platforms now to showcase one’s work. Not to mention API creatives in so many fields like directing, writing, design, cinematography, stunts, etc. And that does affect the ecosystem for authentic and meaningful storytelling for us.
Do you think the opportunities for Asian actors today are fundamentally different, or has the conversation changed faster than the industry itself?
I do think the opportunities for Asian actors are different today. But whether it is simply an increase in volume of work or an improvement in the quality of representation is something we continue to fight for.

Your roots are in Singapore theater. After all the blockbuster movies you’ve been part of, is there a stage role or theater project you’d still love to do?
It’s funny that of all the types of live performances, I have a soft spot for dance.  There are musicals and ballets I would love to do, but as they say, the spirit is willing, but the flesh is not ready for that.
You’ve played a lot of men who know how to control a room. Do you think true power comes from control, influence, or something else?
Sometimes it does, and that kind of power can be seductive and distorting, but I suspect long-lasting power is community-based, respectful and empathetic.

You’ve played everyone from Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat to Long Feng in Avatar: The Last Airbender to Lau in The Dark Knight. If you had to live as one of your characters in real life, who would you choose?
Ha, that’s a tricky one, perhaps Shang Tsung. He’s a shapeshifter, much like an actor who can play different roles. To be fair, Simon Wang in American Born Chinese is a character that’s close to my heart, and I wouldn’t mind walking in his shoes for a bit.

You studied economics and linguistics before dedicating your life to acting. Do you think understanding how language works made you a better actor?
Totally. Whether it’s with words or body language, understanding how we express or hide our feelings and intentions can be most helpful for acting and reacting. But there are many ways to peel this onion.

You have worked with Christopher Nolan and some of the most respected names in the industry. After three decades in the industry, who is the one collaborator, director or actor that you would drop everything to work with?
Ah, there are many who come to mind who are not here today, like Kubrick, Truffaut, Kurosawa, but for now, if Christopher Nolan calls again…
