Everyone’s favorite Korean-China-American actress and rapper is on an unstoppable roll! And she has the killer makeup looks and outfits to match.
Nora Lum aka Awkwafina blazed into the spotlight with her fiery red dress at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and dazzled like diamonds at the Sundance Film Festival where she promoted her new film “The Farewell.”
We got the inside scoop on how Awkwafina’s makeup artist, Kirin Bhatty, got the “Crazy Rich Asians” star red carpet ready at both of these events:
The SAG Look:
Bhatty said Awkwafina’s SAG makeup look was entirely inspired by and built around the color red.
“It’s such a powerful, strong, royal color and it has a presence,” Bhatty said. “I felt that the classic combination of black, inky lashes and red lipstick was best suited to honor this color.”
Step 1: Skin Prep – Before Bhatty began working her magic, she hydrated and prepped Awkwafina’s skin with Shiseido’s Ibuki Refining Moisturizer and Benefiance WrinkleResist 24 Eye Cream.
Step 2: Laying the Foundation – Bhatty is a huge fan of foundation with a natural skin finish. Using a damp beauty sponge, she applied Synchro Skin Glow Luminizing Foundation in Neutral 2 and blended it for a soft, sheer finish.
Step 3: It’s All About the Brows – Using the Brow InkTrio in deep brown and ebony, Bhatty lightly penciled in Awkwafina’s brows to create a full, but natural look. She said using two shades helps to add dimension and definition to brows.
Step 4: The Windows to the Soul – In order to not steal the spotlight from Awkwafina’s bold, red lips, Bhatty went for a more tame eye look. She used the Essentialist Eye Palette in Kotto Street Vintage to create a glamorous, but subtle wash of gilded, bronzy shadows. She then used Aura Dew in Solar and Cosmic and tapped onto the center of the eye to add texture. For a finishing touch, Bhatty then doubled up on New Controlled Chaos MascaraInk (set to launch in March).
Step 5: Highlight and Blush – Bhatty dabbed a bit of Aura Dew in Solar to the tip of Awkwafina’s nose and the high points of her cheeks. Shen then used InnerGlow CheekPowder in Aura Pink on the apples of her cheeks to create a rosy, sheer pop of color.
Step 6: Pucker Up – To achieve Awkwafina’s showstopping matte, red lip, Bhatty used the ModernMatte Powder Lipstick in Exotic Red.
The Sundance Look:
At Sundance, Bhatty wanted to keep Awkwafina’s look simple, but fresh. Her ultimate goal was to celebrate and emphasize Awkwafina’s natural beauty.
“Sundance is all about keeping it cool,” Bhatty said. “Awkwafina has got great style with an edge so I wanted to keep that simple glamour and elevate it with a bit of sparkle.”
Step 1: Moisturize – To combat Park City, Utah’s harsh desert climate, Bhatty applied Shiseido’s Future Solution LX Total Regenerating Cream throughout the day.
Step 2: Laying the Foundation – Bhatty used a damp sponge to apply Synchro Skin Glow in Neutral 2 for a soft, sheer luminous finish. She then used the Perfecting Stick Concealer in Light 11 and Natural Light 22 to brighten the under-eye area and any spots that needed some pick-me-up.
Step 3: It’s All About the Brows – To create natural, full-looking brows, Bhatty used the Brow InkTrio in Deep Brown.
Step 4: The Windows to the Soul – Using the Essentialist Eye Palette in Kotto Street Vintage, Bhatty took the two lighter shades for a sheer wash and defined Awkwafina’s eye crease with the bronze shade. She then used Aura Dew in Rose Gold to add a hint of shimmer. To complete the look, she curled and coated Awkwafina’s lashes with the Controlled Chaos MascaraInk.
Step 5: Wing It – Bhatty created a soft wing with the Kajal InkArtist Liner pencil in Tea House. To add more dimension, she went over the wing with the darkest shade in the Kotto Street Vintage palette.
Step 6: Highlight and Blush – Using her fingertips, Bhatty applied the Minimalist WhippedPowder Blush to the apples of the cheeks and blended upward towards her hairline. To add additional texture and color, she went over the cream blush with a tiny bit of InnerGlow Cheek Powder in Floating Rose. To highlight Awkafina’s signature cheekbones and the tip of her nose, Bhatty used Aura Dew in Solar.
Step 7: Pucker Up – To complete Awkwafina’s fresh and minimal makeup look with a pop of color, Bhatty used the visionAIRY Gel Lipstick in Rose Muse and accented the center of her lips with Lacquer Lip Shine in Optic Rose for a touch of shine.
