The third season of ABC’s “Fresh Off the Boat” premieres tonight in a special episode taped in Taiwan following last season’s cliffhanger ending.
The show follows a family of Taiwanese immigrants as they move from Washington, D.C.’s Chinatown to Orlando, Florida, to open up a cowboy-themed steak restaurant in the mid-90s. It also revolves around the family’s struggles with the cultural shock of blending in with middle-class America.
The show stars Randall Park and Constance Wu as Louis and Jessica Huang, as well as Hudson Yang, Forrest Wheeler and Ian Chen as their three children Eddie, Emery and Evan. The series is loosely based on the life of Eddie Huang, a well-known TV chef who wrote the bestselling book “Fresh Off the Boat: A Memoir.”
Last season, the show ended with Park’s character announcing that he and his family would be going back to Taiwan, so the showrunners took the third season’s premiere to Taipei.
The episode, titled “Coming From America,” will follow the Huangs as they visit Taiwan. All the while, Louis tries to make amends with his brother Gene – played by Ken Jeong, of “Dr. Ken” and “The Hangover” – who disapproves of his life in America.
“Everybody, at some point in their lineage, had to experience this sense of loss, but it’s also a sense of discovery,” Park told Vulture, about tonight’s premiere episode. “There is no real homeland anymore. It’s a weird, bittersweet mix that I feel only our show – at least right now – can really explore in this way.”
The show’s third season premieres tonight at 9 p.m. PST.
