Japanese American soldiers band together to defend their country in this trailer for Hawaiian film project “Go For Broke.”
The film is part of the State of Hawaii’s effort to educate people on the courage of the 442nd Infantry Regiment, comprised mostly of Japanese Americans who were drafted from Hawaii during World War II. The soldiers faced racism and discrimination even as they defended the nation on behalf of the American flag.
Funded in part by a grant from Hawaii, “Go For Broke” is an origins story, following the formation of the regiment and centering on the lives of the young men who made up the military unit. The film also features an original score by Hawaiian ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro.

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated the 442nd Infantry Regiment was entirely Japanese American.
