A new teaser trailer for “The Sympathizer” was released this morning, Feb. 15, with the series set to debut on Sunday, April 14 on HBO. It will also be available for streaming on Max.
The seven-episode limited series is based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s namesake Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, and follows a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy as he navigates his refugee life in Los Angeles, while also reconciling with his last memories of the end of the Vietnam War. The teaser showcases the show’s wide cast of talent, which includes lead Hoa Xuande, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Vy Le, Nguyen Cao Ky Duyen, Kieu Chinh, Duy Nguyen, Alan Trong, Sandra Oh, and Robert Downey Jr. Story-wise, the newly released glimpse shows a number of thrilling sequences, in which The Captain (Xuande) is thrust into undercover spy work between both America and Vietnam. Robert Downey Jr. will be playing multiple roles, echoing the teaser’s sentiment that “A spy is asked to be all things at once.”
Co-showrunners Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar executive produce alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey. The series is an HBO, A24 and Rhombus Media production.
As both an espionage thriller and cutting satire, “The Sympathizer” is sure to gain popularity upon its release. Get ready to watch this April.
