Miyavi, the legendary Japanese rock star and the main villain in the Angelina Jolie-directed film Unbroken, made his first US talk-show appearance on Ellen. Miyavi starts off the interview mentioning that he is very nervous about speaking English, but it turns out he had nothing to worry about. Throughout the interview, Miyavi proved that he is an insightful and articulate man whether he is speaking in English or Japanese.
Ellen started off by asking Miyavi how he got cast in Unbroken since he never acted before. As it turned out, Angelina Jolie (or as Miyavi refers to her throughout the interview, “Angie”) discovered him through the internet. She brought up his name to a Japanese casting director who later contacted him. The Japanese casting director talked to Miyavi about movies and coincidentally, when she asked him who his favorite actor was, Miyavi answered “Angelina Jolie.”
Miyavi also spoke on being wary about taking on the role. As a Japanese person, he was worried about how this role would represent Japan. His fears were alleviated when Angelina Jolie said her intention was to bridge the US, Japan, and other countries by showing a relatable conflict. As Jolie pointed out, “It could be happening anywhere. And it might be happening somewhere.” Miyavi finally decided to take on the role to deliver that message.
Unfortunately, the film has created quite a bit of backlash in Japan. While Miyavi mentions he got physically sick while playing this role because of all the atrocities committed, he seems to have no regrets about his role in Unbroken.
After the interview, Miyavi performed his song “Let Go” to an enthusiastic crowd.
