James Wan’s New Horror Movie Ventures Into Artificial Intelligence

James Wan is introducing a new kind of horror to creep out audiences in the coming year.

The first trailer for the sci-fi horror film “M3GAN” arrived today, Oct. 11, and delivers a futuristic kind of horror nevertheless reminiscent of the classic Child’s Play franchise. But this time, the terrifying doll involves artificial intelligence. The trailer follows a robotics engineer named Gemma (Allison Williams), who abruptly receives custody of her orphaned niece Cady (Violet McGraw) after her parents died tragically in a car crash. Unable to parent her niece to the fullest extent, Gemma uses artificial intelligence to build a life-like doll designed to be Cady’s best friend. Although the M3GAN android was created to help with parenting, the doll soon begins to take its mission to protect Cady to new and horrifying levels. Comedian Ronny Chieng also stars in the film, which will hit theaters on Friday, Jan. 13.

Based on the trailer, Wan’s new movie is sure to give viewers endless nightmares about creepy dolls (again) after his work on the popular Annabelle and Conjuring universe. Blumhouse and Wan’s production company, Atomic Monster Productions, will produce the movie. Wan and his longtime collaborator Akela Cooper are behind the story of “M3GAN,” while Gerard Johnstone will direct.
