Almost 20 years after Scott Westerfeld’s sci-fi young adult novel “Uglies” was first published, the Netflix adaptation finally released the trailer for the film.

Starring Joey King as Tally Youngblood, Brianne Tju as Shay, Chase Stokes as Peris, Keith Powers as David and Laverne Cox as Dr. Cable, the trailer drops viewers in the dystopian world of the “Uglies.” In this conflict-free society, children must undergo surgery at the age of sixteen to fit the idealized beauty standards of the world and go off in bliss after completing the transformation.

But just because everyone’s pretty doesn’t mean there’s not something sinister brewing underneath the surface. In the trailer, the main character, Tally, is eagerly awaiting the cosmetic surgery. Her sudden foreseen life is turned upside down when another girl, Shay, befriends her and begins to chip away at the highly sanitized expectations of the world. As Shay continues to introduce Tally to life outside of her small bubble, they meet a group of rebels, The Smokes, led by their leader, David. Now Tally must confront the goals of the society she grew up in as she explores the new world ahead of her.
