Who’s ready to set off to the wonderful world of Oz? Universal released the latest trailer for the musical “Wicked” today, May 15. The extended trailer allows viewers to dive deeper into the Emerald City, focusing on the lives of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) as they enter Shiz University and juggle their magical powers and clashing personalities. The trailer hints at one of many fan-favorite songs, “Popular,” as the two roommates grow closer, showing scenes from their days at school and the Emerald City at large. But, as Elphaba’s powers grow, she gains the attention of the university’s headmistress, Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh), and the Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum) himself. The story then turns into one of political and personal turmoil as Elphaba comes to terms with her destiny as “The Wicked Witch of the West.”

This will be the first installment of a two-part film series adapting the original “Wicked” musical, which is in its 21st year. With over 7,500 performances to date, it’s one of the longest running shows on Broadway. The film is directed by Jon M. Chu, most known for his past works “Crazy Rich Asians” and “In the Heights.” Outside of Erivo and Grande, the cast is rounded out by Bowen Yang, Jonathan Bailey, Peter Dinklage, Adam James, Keala Settle, Bronwyn James, Ethan Slater and Colin Michael Carmichael.
