K-pop Playlist Of The Week: Wanna One, Girls’ Generation & WINNER

Another week, another round of K-pop summer tracks. Check out which new releases have caught our eyes (and ears) this week, and see which oldie still has us grooving.

“Energetic” – Wanna One

All the hype swirling around Mnet’s “Produce 101” boys is finally building to a crescendo with “Energetic.” A funky, keys-driven track, Wanna One’s debut song showcases the boys’ vocal and dance talents in a way that is reminiscent of Seventeen’s releases, and we appreciate that with their first song, Wanna One is choosing to take the non-hip hop, non-tropical path that’s currently trending.

“What Can I Do?” – Day6

Taking a break from the easy-breezy lazy summer sound, Day6 is trying on something with a little more attitude in “What Can I Do?” Starting with a guitar riff that builds to a brassy chorus, this songs showcases Day6’s musical versatility and makes us excited to see what they have planned for the rest of their Every Day6 project.

“All Night” – Girls’ Generation

Girls’ Generation has inspired plenty of K-pop girl groups over the years, but now they’re ready to step back into the spotlight and remind these newbies who paved the way for their fame. As a partner release to the more bombastic “Holiday,” “All Night” takes a more polished approach to dance pop.

“Island” – WINNER

Following the success of “Really Really,” it looks like WINNER is trying to settle into a tropical house sound with “Island.” The beat stands out more in this song than their partner single “Love Me Love Me,” but it’d sound great playing over your next beach party.

“Dream Girl” – SHINee

SHINee’s “Dream Girl” was the title single to the first “chapter” of their Misconceptions album series, and boy did it give us high expectations. This electro funk dance song made many nervous that SHINee would push the envelope a little too much and miss the mark, but the risky song ended up being a hit that showed off the group’s robust vocals and signature sharp choreography.
