Chinese actress Liu Yifei has been cast in the live-action remake of Disney’s “Mulan” as the eponymous female warrior.
The film was originally released in 1998 as an animation and told the story of a young Chinese woman who disguises herself as a man and joins the Imperial army in order to spare her father from the war.
According to a Hollywood Reporter exclusive, Liu was reportedly cast after the “Mulan” team reviewed over a thousand auditions from young women who boasted both the acting and martial prowess needed for such a demanding role.
Liu, whose English name is Crystal Liu, is one of the most popular young actresses in her native China and has earned the nickname “Fairy Sister” for her pure and innocent charm. She speaks fluent English from time spent in New York as a child and demonstrated capability in martial arts in films such as “The Forbidden Kingdom,” in which she starred alongside Jet Li and Jackie Chan.
