Jon Chu’s dance-drama series, The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers (LXD) premiered with two episodes on Hulu today. Chu, the director of the upcoming movie, Step Up 3-D, already has a significant web following, thanks to his online dance battles featuring Miley Cyrus.
Although LXD is a web series, its partnership with Paramount Digital means that the videos are far from low quality: according to an NYTimes article, the budget was in the millions of dollars.
“This is the most ambitious project that has been done for the Internet,” said Thomas F. Lesinski, the president of Paramount Digital Entertainment, adding later that the cinematography “could hold up in a movie theater.”
LXD has also been getting significant media attention thanks to one of its choreographers, Harry Shum Jr., aka “The Other Asian” from Fox’s Glee, and its performance at the 2010 Oscars.
The series will be split into three volumes, with the first volume, “The Uprising Begins,” lasting 10-episodes.
