If you were on Instagram this past weekend celebrating Lunar New Year, you’ve probably seen the ox stickers featured on your friends’ Instagram stories.
Behind the festive design is Naomi Otsu, a New York-based graphic designer and illustrator whose work has been featured in New York Magazine and Complex Magazine. The artist was approached by Instagram to be a part of their Lunar New Year celebration. “Honestly, I was surprised because I didn’t realize I was on their radar,” Otsu confessed.
Instagram gave Otsu a platform not only to showcase her work to a global audience, but also to express her Asian American heritage. Being a part of the social media platform’s Lunar New Year project has allowed Otsu to celebrate her culture with the world and made her feel seen as an Asian American.
