Must-Try Unique Donut Bakeshops for National Donut Day

We’ve already tried to convince you to head over to a Cambodian-owned donut shop to celebrate National Donut Day (click here to read the history of Cambodian-owned donut shops and how they play an integral part in the Cambodian immigration story), but if you’re looking for something different, I have just the thing.

I have the biggest sweet tooth for baked goods and donuts are close to the top of my list. If there’s a unique flavor I haven’t heard of, I’m all up for trying it out. So what better way to celebrate National Donut Day than to try a unique box of donuts? Sure, you can start your day with that free, classic Krispy Kreme, but if you’re feeling adventurous and looking to try some unique flavors and adorably decorated, Instagram-worthy donuts, here are some bakeries that are worth a visit:

1. Zombee Donuts (Fullerton, CA)

Walkers are welcome at this bake shop! This mother and daughter duo serves your classic, familiar flavors, but with a dark (yet adorable) twist. You’ll find yourself staring at a case of zombie-themed goodies, from chocolate ganache eyeballs to bavarian cream-filled coffins. It’s sure to satisfy fans of The Walking Dead.

2. Voodoo Doughnuts (Portland, OR)

Arnold Palmer and Mango Tango are just some of the many unique flavors you’ll find at this bake shop. Although creativity in flavor and decorations are eye-catching, I recommend leaving the younger ones out of this more mature-themed bakery. You wouldn’t want your seven-year-old reading “Cock-N-Balls donuts” out loud now, would you?

3. DK’s Donuts (Santa Monica, CA)

They call themselves “the best donut shop in L.A.” With their delectable ube (taro) flavored donuts and cronuts and mouth-watering presentations, you would say so, too!

4. Fonuts (Los Angeles, CA)

For the vegan or health nuts out there, thank goodness for Fonuts! They offer very unique flavors you wouldn’t think you’d find in a donut. My favorite? Blueberry Earl Grey. YUM! You can indulge while not having to feel too guilty because the donuts are baked, not fried.

5. Sugar Shack (Alexandria, VA)

When I remember my childhood and growing up in the south, I think of Girl Scout cookies. Yes, I was a little Brownie scout that knocked on your door. Sugar Shack offers a little taste of that Southern comfort with an apple cake donut and, with my favorite Girl Scout cookie, a samoa donut! And who can resist maple and fried chicken?

What’s the most unique donut you’ve ever tried?
