Nathan Chen Wins Second US Figure Skating Championship

Ahead of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang next month, figure skater Nathan Chen took home the No. 1 spot at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships this past weekend.

Eighteen-year-old Chen, who goes into the Olympics as the U.S.’ best hope for singles figure skating gold, landed five quadruple jumps with a 40.72-point victory at the championships in San Jose on Saturday.

Figure skaters Ross Miner and 2017 U.S. silver medalist Vincent Zhou placed second and third behind Chen.

“I definitely set a big bar for myself last year,” Chen told NBC News. “I wouldn’t even say I reached it today. I still have a way to go to beat what I did last year.”

Chen is the youngest of five children to Chinese immigrant parents and hails from Salt Lake City, Utah.
