North Korea Calls on People to Rally Around New Leader

North Korea will be allowing delegations from South Korea who wish to express their condolences upon the death of Kim Jong-il into the North, CNN reported today.

A statement posted on a North Korean government-run website said that officials would “guarantee all convenience and safety of the South Koreans during their visit.”

South Korea has already expressed condolences to the North Korean people, but stated that it will not send an official delegation to the North. However, South Korea will allow a few private groups to send representatives should they wish to do so.

Meanwhile, a front-page editorial by North Korea’s official Rodong Sinmun newspaper on Thursday called on the people of North Korea to unite in support of Kim Jong-un, Kim Jong-il’s third son and handpicked successor, in accordance with his late father’s last wishes. The newspaper referred to Kim Jong-un, believed to be in his late 20s, as the “successor to the revolutionary cause” and the “leader of the people.”
