While world champion figure skater, Kim Yuna, won her 2013 season debut at a minor event in Zagreb, Croatia, her outfit for her short program, “Send in the Clowns,” did not fare as well with the Korean audience.
The bright yellow-olive dress adorned with sparking beads was not well-received by fans and widely disdained as looking childish.
The designer, Ahn Gyu-mi, who has worked with Kim since last season, previously designed outfits for the short program to “The Kiss of the Vampire” and the free skate to “Les Miserables”, but her latest work has been under scrutiny. Within minutes of the short program, fans bombarded Ahn’s website causing the server to crash. The designer currently is refusing to address the media.
In Ahn’s defense, All That Sports, Kim’s management agency, stated that the warm color of the outfit was chosen to “go with the feel of the elegiac and lyrical music.”
The 2010 Olympic champion, Kim, was interviewed after the short program, and was open to “[making] adjustments if there are things that feel uncomfortable in performing the programs.”
Kim fell on her opening triple lutz at the 2013 Golden Spin of Zagreb, but skated clean throughout the rest of her performance. The 23-year-old posted 204.49 points and took the win in her first competition since acquiring a foot injury in September.
