Is the all-American strawberry blond actress, Anna Kendrick, the next big K-pop sensation?
The 27-year-old starlet appears alongside popular Korean girl group f(x) in a video for the humor website,Funny or Die, in which she is shipped off to Korea by an overzealous agent determined to make her “Asia’s sweetheart.”
The video humorously chronicles Kendrick’s journey as the awkward new-girl joining the K-pop group. It’s a tried-and-true Hollywood formula and Kendrick and f(x) don’t shy way from poking a little fun at the stereotypes; the girls of f(x) are appropriately mean as Kendrick fails miserably, and her agent, of course, is an encouraging voice in the background.
At one point, Kendrick butchers a song in Korean, which the girls lightly taunt her about and during a failed makeover, Kendrick bemoans that she looks like a character in Cloud Atlas, mocking the controversial use of yellowface in the 2012 film.
Aside from being a funny video, it shows how far-reaching the Hallyu wave has become. And f(x) — the first K-pop group to perform at the influential SXSW music festival — looks ready to head into the upper echelon of the K-pop kingdom alongside Girls Generation, 2NE1 and Sistar.
Kendrick is best known for co-starring with George Clooney in Up in the Air (2009) and the 2012 musical, Pitch Perfect. And f(x)? Well they are known for busting out chart-toppers like 2009′s “La Cha Ta” and “Electric Shock” last year.
The group counts Korean American Krystal Jung, 18, among its members. The San Francisco native is the younger sister of Jessica Jung of Girls Generation.
