You’re out of your mind if you think “It’s What’s Inside” is just another body swapping movie a la 2003’s “Freaky Friday.”
This sci-fi thriller tetters on the edge of psychological horror as a group of friends, reunited the night before a wedding, descends into chaos and deception as a body-swapping game goes awry and awakens long-hidden secrets, desires and grudges that may tear them apart. The film premiered on Netflix last Friday, October 4, 2024 and stars an ensemble cast including actor Reina Hardesty as Brooke.
Hardesty joined host Michelle Park on “The Takeaway” to discuss her experience working on the film, sharing how she knew “It’s What’s Inside” was going to be special from the moment she read the script. “[During auditions] we got a pitch deck that was very specific with the tone,” Hardesty said. “It was very clear that Greg Jardin, our writer and director, had such a specific idea of what he wanted to do.”
An indie darling, “It’s What’s Inside” premiered at the Sundance Festival and screened at South by Southwest, feats that Hardesty is proud of as a lover of indie filmmaking. “Coming together, [making the film] feels so intimate and you kind of forget about what’s going to come afterwards,” she said. “I’m just so excited for everybody to get to experience this movie and see Greg’s work.”
She also gave insight into not only having to play her own character, but also having to play as other characters and as other characters playing as her character, in true body-swapping fashion. “Everybody was so collaborative with each other,” Hardesty said of the cast, “We were like, ‘Okay, these are Nikki’s mannerisms,’ ‘this how Nikki would feel about this scene.’”
In addition to “It’s What’s Inside,” audiences can also catch Hardesty in the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series, “Butterfly,” starring opposite Daniel Dae Kim, Kim Tae-hee and “Squid Game”’s Park Hae-soo.
