Ryan Potter, the “Big Hero 6” star, has released a viral video showcasing his fighting abilities in an effort to put his name in the bid for Robin in the new “Batman” solo film.
In the video, the 21-year-old actor, who is also known for his role in Nickelodeon’s “Supah Ninjas,” is seen beating on “goons,” in Robin-esque fashion. He’s even showing off his bo staff skills, a weapon used by Robin.
However, Potter wants more than just to don the red and green. He wanted to start “a conversation about breaking the mold in DC’s comic book casting.”
“This was really just to start that dialogue, and it’s clearly done so,” Potter told the Hollywood Reporter. “In the [YouTube] comments, I see time and time again, ‘I don’t want to see an Asian Tim Drake,’ and other people go, ‘Hey, he’s also half-Caucasian.’ On the other end of the spectrum, I see people say, ‘Oh my God, he looks just like him. We need him as Tim Drake.’ That’s exactly what I wanted to happen.”
With only three films in the DC extended universe so far, there is a lot of room for experimentation. And Robin, who has been referenced in at least one of the films, is someone who can make an appearance (at least one of his iterations). Potter is specifically trying to get cast as Tim Drake, whom he has been told he resembles.
The film will be written and directed by Ben Affleck, and Deathstroke will appear as Batman’s main villain. There is no official release date for the film as of now.
