Democratic congressman David Wu is facing pressure from the GOP and the local press to resign after sending a picture of himself dressed up as a tiger to his staff during his campaign last year. Several core members of his staff resigned amid concerns about Wu’s “bizarre behavior” at the end of the 2010 campaign.
The representative from Oregon said that it was “unprofessional and inappropriate,” and even admitted to taking two tablets of painkillers during the campaign as well.
However, Wu has refused to step down despite the pressure.
“This was the only time that this has ever happened,” said Wu regarding the painkillers. “I recognize that my action showed poor judgment at the time, and I sincerely regret having put my staff in a difficult position.”
Wu was also confronted by staff members concerning other erratic behaviors and wanted him to seek psychiatric help.
While I certainly don’t want my representatives to be taking painkillers, I really don’t see any harm in dressing up and having some fun. It’s all kind of silly, and certainly nothing to step down over. If Wu is fit to do whatever it is that politicians do, (Wu insists that he has gotten the help he needs) he shouldn’t have to step down.
In fact, if politicians didn’t take themselves so seriously, I’d like them a lot more. Politicians have done worse… a lot worse and stayed in office. Lets not blow this out of proportion.
