Paramount Pictures released the first trailer for the psychological horror sequel “Smile 2” on Tuesday, June 18. Based on the teaser trailer, fans should expect a promising return to all the scares and freaky grins that made the original a hit that grossed $217.4 million worldwide.

“Smile 2” is written and directed by Parker Finn and takes place in the same universe as the first but with a new cast of characters. The film follows fictional pop sensation Skye Riley, played by Naomi Scott, as she prepares for a world tour. The synopsis states, “Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and the pressures of fame, Skye is forced to face her dark past to regain control of her life before it spirals out of control.” The film also stars Rosemarie DeWitt, Lukas Gage, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Peter Jacobson, Raúl Castillo, Dylan Gelula and Ray Nicholson with Kyle Gallner reprising his role of Joel from the original.

The first film, based on a short film by Finn, follows a therapist played by Sosie Bacon, who experiences disturbing visions and hallucinations that verge on the supernatural. Although initially planned to be released straight on the Parmount+ streaming service, “Smile” got a theatrical release that ended up being the highest-grossing R-rated pandemic-era horror movie worldwide.

Prepare yourself for all the smiles and screams when “Smile 2” hits theaters October 18. For now, check out the trailer to get a sneak preview of the horrors to come.
