South Korea Holds Its First Butt Pageant

by MICHELLE WOO

As a generalization, Asians aren’t known for having award-winning posteriors. (Norwegian-Thai model Chrissy Teigen once lamented to Esquire magazine, “It sucks for me. I have a little half-Asian butt, and the more I work out, the more I try to get it bigger, it’s just going to get flatter and harder.”) But a new event in Korea is, um, cracking that notion. The first Miss Sexy Back Contest was held this week in Gwangjang-dong, Seoul, and as allkpop explains, its mission was to “raise awareness about the healthier and sexier side of beauty.” That apparently meant having female contestants parade around on stage in black cheeky panties and be rated on the “attractiveness of their behinds.” Each woman wore a mask so that their faces wouldn’t interfere with the evaluation process.

Sure, it’s refreshing to see Korean women embrace their curves. But they’re doing so in yet another sexploitative game, where women are advertised as the competitors but, in reality, are the prize.

FYI, Kim Ha Neul, aka Contestant No.7, took first place with one judge saying her “S-line is breathtaking.”

With South Korea reigning as the plastic surgery capital of the world, will butt implants become the new double-eyelid procedure?
