Sung Kim must wait until September before being confirmed by the Senate as the U.S. ambassador to South Korea, congressional sources said yesterday.
Kim would be the first Korean-born U.S. Ambassador to Seoul if confirmed.
The confirmation was on the agenda before the Senate entered summer recess on Tuesday night after passing the debt-ceiling bill.
Congress initially set the first day of break to Aug. 6. However, because it held debt-ceiling talks through the Independence Day holidays, legislators initiated their hiatus early by four days. They will resume on Sept. 6.
Kim, though, already received the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations approval a week after a confirmation hearing on July 21.
So far, no senator has contended against Kim’s confirmation, meaning it is “just a matter of time,” according to Yonhap News.
