Justin Chon joins Kevin Wu, Shuya Chang and Harry Shum Jr. in Revenge of the Green Dragons, an upcoming action crime-drama executive produced by Martin Scorsese. Ray Liotta, Billy Magnussen and Geoff Pierson also make appearances.
Set in the 1990s, the plot follows two immigrant brothers Sonny (Chon) and Steven (Wu), who join a New York Chinatown gang, the Green Dragons, to escape poverty and pursue the American Dream. Sonny and Steven rise up the ranks quickly, but things come to a head when Sonny turns against his brother and his gang, following an ill-fated love affair.
Directed by Andrew Lau and Andrew Loo, Green Dragons was inspired by Frederick Dannen’s New Yorker article that chronicled Asian American gang life in Queens. Deadline.com also notes that this movie is a reunion of sorts for Lau and Scorsese, as Lau’s Infernal Affairs was the inspiration for The Departed.
The movie is set to debut at the Toronto Film Festival next month. Green Dragons will then be available exclusively on DirecTV for 30 days from Sept. 11 and will finally hit theaters in October through A24.
