There’s no doubt that K-pop has gone global in the last ten years, but there’s never been a group in the making quite like the one forming from survival show “The Debut: Dream Academy.” The joint venture by leading Korean entertainment company HYBE (home to top K-pop groups like BTS and NewJeans) and Geffen Records (which houses artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Yungblud) is set to make history by creating a global girl group molded after those in the K-pop industry.
The new series launched in September featuring 20 idol hopefuls who underwent a year’s worth of performance training to become part of this girl group. Viewers will not only get to watch the candidates perform various song and dance covers, including Le Sserafim’s “Antifragile” and Paramore’s “Still Into You,” they will also get an intimate look into the rehearsal and preparation time for each assigned mission. After each mission, fans will get the opportunity to vote for their favorite contestant on Weverse and TikTok alongside a panel of industry experts who will decide which girls will be eliminated until the final lineup is confirmed.
As of this article being written, two candidates, Adela and Hinari have both been eliminated with several other hopefuls to be eliminated in the following weeks until the series finale which will be streamed live on November 17. While much remains under wraps for this girl group, fans can look forward to an untitled Netflix documentary series about the audition and debut process by award-winning filmmaker Nadia Hallgren, slated to premiere sometime in 2024
