In anticipation of “Blade Runner 2049,” which opens in theaters next week, illustrious anime creator Shinichiro Watanabe has produced a short anime prequel entitled “Blade Runner 2022.”
The anime film is roughly 15 minutes in length and centers on the events leading up to a blackout that ultimately brings about a halt in the production of Replicants.
Anime fans might recognize Watanabe’s animation style and storytelling sensibility from revered past works such as “Cowboy Bebop” and “Samurai Champloo.” In a promotional video for “Blade Runner 2022,” Watanabe cites “Blade Runner” as one of the most important influences on his work directing anime. He also said that it was of utmost priority to him to pay respect to the “Blade Runner” universe without becoming merely an imitation.
