Who’s Your Uncle? K-Pop Star IU’s Popularity Helped By Old Men

by Colin Takahashi

IU seems to be everywhere these days. She can be seen on Kim Yuna’s ice skating reality show “Kiss and Cry” as well as several variety programs.

How exactly has the K-pop idol become famous? It definitely helped that she is pretty. Not to mention, she has a crazy amount of aegyo (cuteness) and the ability to hit three octaves within a matter of seconds. But who exactly is it that loves these things about IU?

Her ‘uncle fans.’

un·cle fan [uhng-kuh | fan]

-noun

1. A male fan from the age of 18 to 30. He is often very protective and consistently is updated on the star’s latest actions and words. He will often frequent music programs and shows.

In an interview with Allkpop, IU speaks about her growing popularity and how much of it is thanks to these uncle fans who support her. When asked about her experience with such fans, she says:

“I think the uncle fans consider me as someone like their niece. Since I’m not as pretty as the other female celebrities, I think I give off the vibe of a friendly younger sister who lives next door. Even when I look at myself, I feel like I’m receiving overflowing popularity even when I know I still lack a lot. On music programs, a lot of oppa fans come directly on set to support me. I was shocked to even see 40-year-old fans. They tell me to take care of my body, and send a lot of ginseng and herbal medicine.”

It could just be me, but I believe there is something strange with the dynamic of this relationship. Think about it. A 40-year-old man telling this young girl, however famous she may be, that she should “take care of her body” and even sending her various types of medication.

Recently, these uncle fans have come out with an anthem which shows their passions for the young singer. Korean netizens are praising this anthem, but I feel like it’s borderline inappropriate. It’s one thing to love an artist for their talent, but I’m not quite sure that is all they are admiring. I, myself, love IU for her charisma and clear singing talent; however, I don’t think I would ever release an anthem exclaiming my love for a 19 year-old-girl at the age of 40.

Even if they truly see IU as the ‘niece’ that she thinks they do, I still think they are getting a little too close to the star.
