Why South Korea’s TV Election Coverage Is Superior

by MICHELLE WOO

Charts and graphs and people in suits reading off teleprompters? Yawn. South Korean television networks know how to keep election coverage entertaining—with zany, video-game-like animations. On SBS broadcasts, candidates’ heads have been plopped into jousting matches, pogo stick competitions, Gangnam Style marathons and Raiders of the Lost Ark-type quests as the results come in. While some say the graphics are over the top and distracting, I can’t stop watching. Maybe American news networks should try it. Who wouldn’t have tuned in to a Barack and Mitt pillow fight?
