Incredible Pen Drumming: Who Knew School Supplies Could Sound This Cool?

90s kids, let’s throw it back to middle school real quick! Do you recall how cool you thought you were because you could make Clipse’s “Grindin'” beat on your desk? I won’t even deny it, I watched my classmates and memorized the pattern of their palms and knuckles hitting the desk. Although reenacting “Grindin'” made for a great party trick, I haven’t knocked on tables since. But that’s not the case for beat-makers, Shane Bang and Kevin Ke.

What do you do when life gives you pens? You make music. Shane Bang teams up with good friend, Kevin Ke, to create some of the craziest beats using only a desk, pens, everyday items and their imagination. The fact that they can create complex cadences with such simple “instruments” is a testament to their innovation and creativity. It’s a nice reminder that it’s not about what you have, but what you do.

“I’d always wanted to be a drummer since I was a little kid, but my family couldn’t afford a drum set,” Bang explained in his interview with Daily Dot. “Around middle school, I discovered while I was bored in class that I could make simple cadences by hitting my pens on my desk. By the time I was a freshman in high school, I was pretty good, and I created a YouTube channel and uploaded my first video, just for the heck of it. I never thought it would blow up as much as it did.”

Bang’s talents has been gaining recognition, and was featured in a Sharpie commercial:

And even Microsoft got ahold of both Bang and Ke:
