A tribute art show for legendary Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki will be held at the Mid-City Art House in Los Angeles on Aug. 6 and 7.
“The Enchanted World of Miyazaki” honors the work of the man behind critically acclaimed films like “Princess Mononoke” and “Spirited Away” by displaying the work of over 20 artists from around the United States.
“Miyazaki’s movies don’t simply feel like a story, they feel like a peek into another world,” said Sophie Diao, who is one of the featured artists. “The amount of detail and nuance in each of his films is staggering. I love how he isn’t afraid to make films for adults and children alike.”

Together, the artists will bring beloved characters like Totoro and Noh-Face to life, as everything from toys to paintings.
Guests will be able to purchase their work, many of them exclusive to the show. Artist Renee Lawter, who hand-packages all her pieces, will be one of the artists guests can purchase from. Some of the proceeds will go to Welcome Home Sanctuary, an initiative whose goal is to create an all-inclusive, healthy community for humans and animals.
“He creates the perfect worlds, somewhere between here and another universe, where ordinary people have these extraordinary experiences,” Lawter said. “I am honored to be part of this show – he is truly a master.”
Miyazaki’s work, which spans decades, has garnered the respect of artists worldwide. For many of them participating in this weekend’s show, involvement was a no-brainer.
“A major challenge for me in this project was to create my first-ever completed Ghibli-related art pieces,” said Henry Liao, who will be doing a live drawing at the show. “The reason I’ve never done any is because I’ve always felt that masterpieces such the Ghibli films are untouchable. I just feel that Miyazaki-sensei’s work is so complete, there is nothing I can do make them even more lovely and amazing.”
