‘Elementary’ To Close Up Shop After Seventh Season

After years of lukewarm ratings, CBS has announced that “Elementary”’s upcoming seventh season will be its last.

The modern retelling of literature’s favorite detective first garnered attention when Lucy Liu was cast to play Joan Watson, aka John Watson. The casting decision made her the first actress and Asian American to play the beloved doctor and confidante on television.

The news comes as no surprise to the show’s producers, who intentionally made the sixth season’s finale feel like a conclusive wrap-up just in case plans for the show’s seventh season fell through.

“I had to assume this was the end for the series,” Doherty said in an interview with TVLine. “So I thought it was time for Sherlock to stop beating around the bushes and let the subtext be the text for once.”

Though the doctor and detective relocated to London for the sixth season’s finale, the duo will be back in the Big Apple for the show’s last season. A premiere date for the seventh season has yet to be announced. Production wrapped up last week.
