Kim Jong-il's Eldest Son Disagrees With Succession

I have to admit, when I saw the AP headline, “Playboy son of NKorea leader raps succession plan,” I was expecting some sort of grainy YouTube parody.

But Kim Jong-nam, the playboy son of current North Korea leader Kim Jong-il, isn’t making a foray into the rap world. He’s apparently too busy gambling and having fun in Macau and China.

He did have the time to conduct an interview with Japan’s TV Asahi, where he stated that he does not agree with third-generation succession, but at the same time, says he has no regrets about being passed over.

Although the statements could seem like an attack, it’s likely to be summarily dismissed by his country and his father, with whom he lost favor after trying to sneak into Japan with a fake passport to go to Disneyland.

Kim Jong-il has three known sons, Kim Jong-nam, Kim Jong-chul, who he has derided as being girlish, and Kim Jong-un, who was recently promoted to a four-star general.
