4.29 Essay Contest

The Korean American Coalition (KAC) and Elite Educational Institute are joining together to host the 4.29 Essay Contest.

As most of you know, 4.29, or Sa-I-Gu, refers to the 1992 Los Angeles Riots/Civil Unrest. KAC and Elite are hoping the essay contest will help the younger generation of Korean Americans gain deeper insight and help them learn how the Korean American community fits into the diverse ethnic landscape of Los Angeles.

The contest is open to current high school and college students – the deadline is APRIL 12 and the grand prize winner will win $1,000, while three first place winners will win $300 and three runner-up winners will win $150.

To participate, applicants must interview a Korean American who experienced the Los Angeles Riots first-hand, and then share opinions on how this event may have impacted the Korean American community, the African American community and the Latino community in L.A. The essay should answer the following question: How has the Korean American community changed as a result of the Riots, and what changes, if any, should be made in cultural relations between various ethnic communities?
