Korea’s Ji To Join Prestigious EPL’s Sunderland

Soccer star Ji Dong-Won will join Sunderland of the English Premier League next year, making the 20-year-old forward the youngest Korean to play in the top-flight league.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Chunnam Dragons of the South Korea’s K-League said the two teams have agreed to transfer Ji to England in a three-year deal. Terms were not discussed.

The transfer price was approximately $3.5 million, according to Yonhap news agency.

Ji will be the eighth South Korean to join the Premier League, according to AFP. However, Park Ji-Sung of Manchester United and Bolton’s Lee Chung-Yong were the only Koreans to play in England last season.

“I know there will be stiff competition for playing time, and my goal is to become the player that the team wants me to be in six months.

“I am also looking forward to playing against Ji-Sung and Chung-Yong, whom I both admire.”

Ji has six goals in 11 international matches and was runner-up for the K-League rookie of the year in 2010 after scoring eight goals in 26 games, according to AFP.
