Filipino boxing great Manny Pacquiao is hanging up his gloves.
An eight-division world champ and current senator of the Philippines, Pacquiao announced on Sept. 28 that he will be retiring from the ring. “It is difficult for me to accept that my time as a boxer is over,” he said in a video posted to social media. “Today, I am announcing my retirement. I never thought that this day would come.” He went on to thank his fans around the world, especially the Filipino people, for supporting him as an athlete.
The announcement arrives a month after Pacquiao’s Aug. 21 loss via decision to Yordenis Ugas. Since the 1990s, “Pacman” has notched 12 world titles and remains the only fighter in boxing history to become champion of eight different divisions. He has also stated his intentions to run for president of the Philippines against Rodrigo Duterte in the nation’s 2022 election.
Other boxers like former pro Timothy Bradley, Jr. extended their congratulations to Pacquiao. “Congratulations to Manny Pacquiao on a well-earned retirement,” Bradley told ESPN. “Thank you for being an inspiration to many in and out of the sport. Enjoy the next chapter of your life alongside your family.”
