Ride-Tracking, A Rearview Camera And Lasers Beams? Meet The Samsung Smart Bike

by MICHELLE WOO

Sure, your bike may be super high-tech with a smartphone mount and GPS system, but does it have freakin’ laser beams?

Samsung’s Smart Bike does.

Okay, so they’re not meant to zap out evil riders nearby (though I’m sure there’s a video game for that). Instead, they project lines on the road to create a virtual bike lane, helping motorists stay at a safe distance.

The just-unveiled design, which is still in the concept phase (shucks!), also features an arduino computer that works in conjunction with a smartphone. Cyclists can track rides, see who else is around in real-time, connect with others via a social platform and let authorities know where bike lanes are needed. A rear-view camera shows riders what’s behind them so they don’t have to twist their heads.

Presented at 2014 Milan Design Week, Samsung created the bike in conjunction with the Maestros Academy, which the company co-founded with the goal of “preserving Italian craftsmanship in the digital age.” We hope it gets rolling soon.
