Korean American Diplomat Accorded Rank of Ambassador

C.S. Eliot Kang, the deputy assistant secretary of state for nuclear affairs, has been accorded the rank of ambassador by President Barack Obama ahead of an international conference on the convention on nuclear safety that will be held next month, said the State Department on Wednesday.

According to the State Department’s press release, Kang’s appointment became effective Jan. 26, 2015. In his role as ambassador, Kang will lead the U.S. delegation to the Diplomatic Conference for Feb. 9-13, 2015, at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria. He will continue to serve as the deputy assistant at the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation (ISN).

Kang joined the State Department in 2003 as a William C. Foster Fellow and served as a senior adviser in the Arms Control Bureau. His previous government positions include serving as the principal deputy assistant secretary for ISN and deputy assistant secretary for threat reduction, export controls and negotiations. He also worked as the senior advisor for North Korean denuclearization.

 

A former tenured professor, Kang used to teach international security at University of Pennsylvania and Northern Illinois University and held fellowships at the Council on Foreign Relations and the Brookings Institution, according to the State Department.
