When “Aquaman” first hit theaters, it was met with mixed critical reviews and doubts about its box office potential. But it looks like this under… fish is beating the odds.
“Aquaman” became the first film in the DC Extended Universe to pass the $1 billion mark on Saturday, leaving its reported $160-200 million budget in the dust.
The film’s success seems to be largely due to its popularity in the international market — namely in China, where it has earned, to date, $287.3 million.
The film has made $733 million internationally and $287 million domestically for a grand total of $1 billion, according to Box Office Mojo.
THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has supported this underdog. For making this non-mainstream character (and yes — with leading POC individuals in front and behind the camera!) connect on such a huge global scale. In the words of Aquaman himself, “MAHALO”
