Hollywood TV Adaptation of Kurosawa’s ‘Rashomon’ in the Works

A television series based on “Rashomon,” considered one of the greatest films of all time, is in the works at Amblin Television.

Amblin — which recently co-produced Netflix’s buzzy “The Haunting of Hill House” with Paramount — has optioned the rights to the Akira Kurosawa-directed masterpiece, which was released in Japan in 1950 to international acclaim.

A plan is underway for a dramatic mystery thriller series with 10-episode seasons.

“Rashomon” itself was based on a short story by Japanese writer Ryunosuke Akutagawa. The winner of the Golden Lion at the 1951 Venice Film Festival and the Academy Honorary Award at the 1952 Academy Awards, the film investigates a samurai’s murder and the rape of his wife through four different perspectives.

Amblin TV Presidents Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey said in a statement to Deadline that the adaptation “will explore the boundaries of truth and how different perspectives don’t often reveal the same reality.”
